Botanical Name: Humulus lupulus
Recognised for its sedative, antimicrobial action of hops and is yet very soothing and tones the skin and hair, it is thought to help aid relief from swelling and itching and irritation.
The chemistry of this plant is well understood and the pharmacological activities of this plant support its herbal use. Hops herb has been used in traditional medicine because of its topical antibacterial activity and has been used to treat ulcers. The German Commission E listed the use of this herb for its sedative properties and for the treatment of mood disorders.
Known to contain flavonoids, such as quercetin and rutin, chalcones, tannins such as the potent antioxidant gallocatechin, amino acids, phenolic acids and the anti-inflammatory gamma-linolenic acid.
The use of this plant is listed under the council of Europe as a food ingredient.
