Botanical Name: Corallina officinalis
Location: West Coast of Kerry, Ireland.
Seaweed type: Wild-harvested
Drying method: Natural, wind and sun.
This seaweed is a rigid mineralised seaweed that can be ground in to a fine powder and incorporated in to soap products, which satisfies an important exfoliating function, yet is incredibly soft and gentle to the skin, that aids in the removal of dead skin cells, is soothing and leaves tired, dull skin refreshed.
Benefits:
This seaweed is a calcified seaweed making it ideal for use as a gentle exfoliating powder when ground up and used in Doctor Maher’s Luxury soap, where it gently and safely helps to remove dead and loose cells from the skin surface.
?This seaweed also possesses skin-conditioning activity, helping to maintain the skin in good condition. Calcium is a common element in skin and regulates the rate of cell division in the epidermis, determining how fast new cells replace old cells. Skin with low calcium stores may appear fragile, thin and dry. This appearance is because there is not enough calcium present to spur on the replacement of old with new vigorous cells.
Composition:
C. officinalis is akin to most seaweed species in the ability to chemically protect itself against the damaging effects of the sun, palytine and shinorine are two microsporine-like chemicals that are found in this species which are thought to protect this seaweed against the damaging effects of UV radiation.
?Corallina is a rich source of calcium, because the rigid skeleton of this unusual seaweed is calcified for structural strength.
