Botanical Name: Calendula officinalis
Particularly useful for sensitive skin, this herb is mainly used dermatologically, because it is calming especially when used with other oils, many use calendula to help heal acne scars and burns, known especially for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.
Many phytochemical studies have been conducted on this plant; animal studies have demonstrated the wound-healing properties of this plant, which supports the traditional use of this plant for various dermatological conditions. The anti-inflammatory activity this important herb exhibits is attributed to its triterpenoid constituents; however, it is thought that its flavonoid constituents also may contribute to this activity.
This herb has traditionally been used as an anti-inflammatory, vulnerary or agent to help heal cuts and bruises or similar injuries that break or damage the skin and has well documented antiseptic properties, used for eczema or atopic dermatitis and other inflamed lesions. Studies have shown that extracts of this plant have angiogenic properties or the ability to encourage the formation of new blood vessels.
